Thanatos took a moment to reflect on what his next course of action would be. He had been so certain that travelling to the City of Dion, the mortal doorstep of Olympus, was where he needed to go. But after his encounter with Pythia, he realized that there was no way he could just show up in Dion, declare his loyalty and be allowed to re-enter his homeland. No, it would not be that simple – Thanatos knew this journey was going to require both time and challenges, proving himself to the gods, before he would be permitted back to the heavenly city of Olympus.

He set out from Delphi, without a clear direction, as he tried to construct a plan of action. There was no plainly defined path, showing him where he needed to be, or what challenges awaited him. Thanatos was strong-willed and fearless, bearing a warrior's heart, and he yearned to begin his quest immediately. But Thanatos was not sure where that path began, or how to find what it was the god's where hoping he would endure.

He found himself traveling south, comforted by the warm ocean breeze and smell of salt in the air, as he worked out different strategies in his mind. Maintaining an easy gallop, he let his legs work out his frustration, while his mind pondered the possibilities. The sky began to gradually darken, and Thantos found himself back near the outskirts of Athens as the sun began to set – filling the sky with vibrant hues of oranges, pinks, and purples. The setting sun reflected the last of its beams off an ancient citadel, the Acropolis of Athens, located on a elevated rocky outcrop that overlooked the city.

A small feeling of nostalgia filled his chest, as he looked up towards the ancient architecture sitting atop the flattened rocky knoll. Having nowhere else to be, Thanatos began the ascent towards the Propylaea, the monumental entrance to Acropolis, as the night sky swallowed the last of the sun's rays and darkness settled over the city in a blanket of deep blue.

Thanatos walked through the Acropolis, remembering each of the buildings and temples. He felt at home here, where mythology touched the Earth and remnants of the gods power were displayed in plain sight. Each of the alters, sanctuaries and temples held their own special and significant meanings. Thanatos walked quietly and reverently, maintaining an air of nobility and majesty, as he tried to connect with gods whom these buildings were created to worship and serve. He moved northwards, and drew near the Erechtheion, the temple of Athena and Poseidon. He recalled a previous mission, where Athena had borrowed his services, and delight he felt as he was able to deliver justice to those who had wronged an innocent maiden.

He stepped onto the Porch of Caryatids, an extension of the Erechtheion temple that housed stone maidens carved as support columns. Standing in the midst of history and ancient architecture, he looked out over the city of Athens, as he basked in glowing moonlight and warm firelight, while fireflies danced in the night air like tiny stars around him. Thanatos summoned a breeze to stir the warm air around him, blowing through his mane gently as the torches cast flickering shadows across the stone. He looked like a god, full of power and beauty… he would not wait, sitting around for 'something' to happen; no he would set out in the morning and embark upon whatever lay before him as the commanding warrior that he was. He would find his way home….

Nothing like finishing right under the wire on this one - but I really wanted to take my time and put some extra effort into this piece. I've been working on this over the last week, now that my finger is mostly healed up. It's the first time I've played around with backlighting and using "colored" (cool moonlight and warm firelight) light sources. I definitely could use some more practice on that front – but I really enjoyed trying something new . And still trying to work on improving my backgrounds – this one was a challenge as I had to 'make up' the inside of the Porch of the Caryatids, since the only pictures I could find were all taken from the exterior. And I could use a lot more practice painting stones.
All tips and constructive criticism welcome.
